A structural engineer is a Professional Engineer
and includes the designation of P.E. after his or her name. Before becoming a P.E., an engineer must successfully complete 4 to 6 years at an accredited school of engineering plus 2 to 4 years practical experience working under the supervision of another person who is already a Professional Engineer. A passing grade must also be achieved on a two day examination administered by the state issuing the license.
There are many types of Professional Engineers including chemical, nuclear, aerodynamic, petroleum, mechanical, civil and others. A structural engineer concentrates on the mathematical analysis of buildings, bridges and other structures and has taken college courses specific to that discipline. Unfortunately, some Professional Engineers in other disciplines offer their services as structural engineers even though they do not have the proper education or experience.
